Middleton Lodge

This historic two acre walled garden is part of Middleton Lodge, a Georgian country estate in Yorkshire that is home to a hotel, restaurant and wedding venue. The idea was to bring this garden back into use and create an intimate space with something for every season and a backdrop to the Fig House.

The garden, which is all on one level, is divided into four distinct areas designed to reach their peak at different times of the year. There’s a spring garden, summer garden, prairie garden and a kitchen garden, the latter reflecting how the space would have once been used. As one part of the garden quietens, another springs up and there is always an area that is flowering, fruiting or sculptural. In contrast, the central lawn provides a pause between the seasonal gardens, planted simply with Indian bean trees and box topiary.

Four domed iron arbours are spaced throughout and trained with pears, white roses and wisteria to add height and structure. Pathways that would have once been straight for ease of access now weave and thread their way through the garden, encouraging visitors to meander and stop to look around them.
