The Laurent-Perrier Garden

The 2003 Chelsea garden developed and refined some of the ideas of our 2001 garden, in which a relatively minimal composition of geometric planes of hard material was set within a stylised matrix of planting, modelled on semi-natural plant communities.

Built structure was reduced to a single form: a wall of riven slate which folded at right angles to form a terrace. A recess in the terrace formed a pool, echoed with a smaller recess on the vertical plane of the wall. The planting took its inspiration from an English woodland in spring, with a carpet of herbaceous perennials extending under a canopy of flowering Cornus kousa. A loose hedge of evergreen Ilex crenata formed a backdrop and boundary to two sides of the garden. The garden was built by Crocus.
