Rutland Garden

This garden has been designed to provide context and connection to the surrounding landscape, following the extension of an existing farmhouse to incorporate the surrounding buildings. The garden includes a new tennis court on higher ground which is reached through an area of quite dense planting that effectively screens the court from view. From here the garden descends gradually and opens out to wide views.

The house sits partly in the more intimate enclosed area of the garden and is partly open to the landscape. The main construction materials are locally sourced Clipsham stone used for the walls, York stone for paving and timber. The farmhouse was restored and extended by Smallwood Architects. These photographs show the garden in its first full year, following completion in 2018.
