Meadows & prairies

Tom has a particular interest in native and exotic meadow vegetation. The native meadow at the barn was sown 25 years ago and is cut once a year for hay in late summer. The exotic meadow was developed with advice from James Hitchmough at Sheffield University and was sown in spring 2011. It is similar to other meadows that James has created in collaboration with Tom, but is definitely one of the best! It contains about 40 species of exotic plants and Tom is now adding new species to it. Maintenance is much less than planted areas of the garden, but considerably more intensive than the native meadow.
